First Look Wedding Photos – Pros and Cons

It has long been tradition that the wedding couple don’t see each other until the ceremony and the first ‘look’ is often when the Bride walks up the aisle to meet her Groom. However, in the last few years some couples have chosen to have a ‘First Look’ before the ceremony with just them and their photographer. The First Look wedding day photo is popular overseas and lots of Irish couples are choosing to do it for their wedding.

We take a look at the Pros and Cons of having a first look on your wedding day

PROS

  • Ease the nerves! If one or both of you are particularly nervous about the wedding ceremony then a First Look can help ease your nerves. It will give you both a chance to see each other without all your guests watching and you will have a little quiet time together to reassure each other.
  • Photo Opportunity Most First Looks are captured by your photographer as they happen and the results are often quite amazing as the raw emotion of the moment is captured forever.

  • Timing A first look is a great idea if you are having a Winter Wedding as it gives you time to have photos when it’s still light. It can get dark from 4pm in winter so having photos before the ceremony will give your photographer more photo options.
  • Privacy Your Wedding Day can be a complete whirlwind and you and your new husband/wife will find it difficult to get a moment to yourselves. A First Look can be a great opportunity to spend some time together ahead of the madness. Your photographer and videographer will of course be with you but will generally stay in the background.
  • More time to Party! Couples put great time and effort into planning the perfect Drinks Reception for their guests and rarely get to enjoy much of it themselves! Having photos taken before the ceremony will mean you have more time to spend celebrating with your guests after the reception.

Pressure and Expectation There can be an expectation for a Groom to react a ‘certain way’ when he sees his bride for the first time and some might find this to be an added pressure and make the nerves worse! A First look isn’t for everyone and you both need to feel 100% uncomfortable with it.

  • Earlier Start As First Look photos are taken before the ceremony you need to get up earlier and be ready early to give you plenty of time. Depending on the size of your Bridal Party and the start time of your ceremony you may find you have to be up super early.

  • Logistics Generally in Ireland the wedding couple are in separate homes and usually a few miles from each other on the morning of the wedding. It can be difficult to find a photo location convenient to you both to allow you to meet and get to the ceremony on time. You don’t need the extra stress on the morning of your Wedding Day!
  • The Aisle Moment Walking down the aisle towards your future husband is something that most Brides to Be have imagined throughout the planning process and a First Look can dilute this for you both.
